Canon 400D
The Canon 400D is in general an excellent camera, but there are a few annoying things about it.
Annoyances
- Lack of Auto ISO, unless you want auto *everything* (which means auto flash (eww), and no continuous shooting mode). In day to day photography, the ISO is the thing I have to fiddle with the most. I would like it to just pick the best it can get away with (given a chosen minimum shutter speed).
- Too many things only accessible through fiddly menu
- Auto exposure bracketing
- WB bracketing
- Custom WB
- Mirror lockup
- Editing picture styles (I don't do this very often, but it deserves a mention for being especially fiddly)
- Auto WB does not work that well under incandescent light - pictures turn out too orange and you have to set the WB manually. This is especially annoying if you switch between using the flash and not.
- The viewfinder's a little small. Some SLRs (eg. the 5D, and a Canon from the 1960's) have nice big viewfinders. And the viewfinder in a medium format TLR is so huge that it makes the view look much better than the pictures will turn out! (hmmph)
- No USB mass storage support. I hear the 450D also doesn't have this.
- Flash assisted autofocus. WTF?! Are you trying to antagonise everyone in the room? Please turn that off. At least it can be turned off, unless you're in auto everything mode, which is another reason not to use that.
- Programmable middle button (custom function number 1) can only be programmed to perform one of a limited subset of camera functions
- AI Focus/Servo Focus fights with FTM focussing. Could be described as a "feature", but remember that AI Focus is enforced when in Full-Auto mode.
- Can easily overscroll when replaying photos
Things that would be nice
- Less noise at high ISO, and higher ISO
- Quicker replay when scrolling through photos
